I came to korea last week to visit my parents. This time i'm only staying for a little more than 3 weeks. All my dad wants to do is to take me to mountains and old temples, and i follow him around to please him -- but a short visit to Tongdo-sa was wonderful. These historical buildings built more than 1300 years ago are well-preserved although some parts were destroyed during the Japanese invasion in 1592. The main temple is designated as national treasure #144.

And afterwards I got to enjoy healthy, vegetarian food for dinner. :-)

now that summer classes are over, i decided to celebrate by going to lake george with my friends over the weekend. we wanted to get on the boat, but the rental place closed early. it was a long drive there, but the trip with a lot of fun.

Three weeks ago, I decided to take a short trip to Florida. It was a guilt trip since it was during finals and I had to take all my work with me on the trip. I actually had to go see my older brother who came home from Singapore to get his citizenship. It was a great weekend because the weather was awesome and I was able to get some fresh air away from my desk.

Thanks to our dear friend Johny, we went fishing on the boat. Saw some dolphins.

Caught some fish but had to let them go since my mom already caught several few days before and didn't eat them yet.

I came across this illustrator/graphic designer named Julia Guther, and I fell in love with these cutout illustrations and typography. Her work is simple, yet very colorful and interesting use of different media. Love them! :-)

I have the same mole...but smaller. I only saw you for one stop and got off at 34th. Before I left I said "That looks so good right now, I'm starving".....because I was horny for your food. I really was starving and maybe that's why I didn't stay on and bother you for a bite and a kiss from your lips. Your face looked kinda pretty also.

I'm done with all 21 illustrations, but still need to revise all the layouts for back of the cards and the posters. Had the busiest/stressful week ever. Spent a day working for my professor from last semester with some design job, which was a lot of fun. Had to miss Thursday class in order to avoid passing out. Tried to recharge my body by sleeping all day Friday and Saturday, which I had too much of, because now I'm too relaxed and don't feel like doing anything. I lost all my motivation...Ugh!

For one of my school projects, I had a chance to include some illustration work. I decided to use the stories on "missed connections" and picked out funny stories to illustrate. I wanted to exaggerate the scenes to make them funnier -- but most of the stories are hilarious as the way they are. I'll be able to post all of them up once I'm done. I had to share these with you because the second story, especially, is so hilarious that I had to bite my lips to stop myself from bursting out laughing in class today.

You Were Puking All Over The Subway

Last week I was taking the D train to Rockefeller Center to wait all night for SNL tickets. I was prepared with a blanket, gloves, hand warmers and all the other necessities to keep myself warm while I waited on the sidewalk for 6 hours. I was alone on the train until you and your shitfaced friends came on. You had to lay down on the raunchy seats, otherwise you’d feel like you were in a tilt-a-whirl. Time passed and you all were still drunk and being stupid, then the rocking of the train intensified... and the pukefest began. All of you started one by one, puking on different areas of the floor of the train. I had to tuck my feet in the chair with me because your colorful vomit was sliding and spreading across the floor like hot butter. I took my things out of my large bag and handed it to you so could finish in it. You amazed me with your ability to keep going. The bottom of the bag ended up falling through and my effort was pointless. I ended up leaving a glove in that bag, but it was already wasted. You finally stopped and I had to breathe through my mouth the rest of the time on the train so I wouldn’t puke. Once my stop came, I had to make an olympian jump off the train to avoid your vomit. I just wanted to say YOU’RE WELCOME for lending you the bag and giving you listerine breath strips since you never managed to say THANK YOU. And don’t worry about replacing my glove, my hand is still thawing out from freezing all night.

Does anyone know where/how I can make a box like that in the picture? I have to make one for class, but I'm not sure if I need to look for a place that prints and custom-makes a box, or if I should look for some kind of special laminating place.

It has to be thick and sturdy like a cardboard. Or maybe I should build a cardboard box and cover it with some kind of a cloth that I can run in a printer. Any ideas?

finally got my copies of KoreAm in the mail.

I did these illustrations last summer -- but didn't get the actual copies until yesterday. I love finding new magazines when I open my mailbox. I couldn't take some illo jobs recently because I was so crammed with school work, but I'm about to work on a new one, and I am also doing a school project that involves about 20 illustrations (crazy)... so i'll be able to post some new work here soon. :)

I never knew framing art was this complicated and painful. I cut my fingers twice trying to frame my artwork because the edges of the frame were so sharp. Overall I'm pretty excited about the show this Saturday, and the pieces look better as a whole once I framed them.

Didn't get to spend Christmas with my family this year, but had a wonderful day anyways.

Lovely dinner at Becco. The manager at the restaurant slightly bumped into our table by accident cuz there were so many people. At the end of our meal, he surprised us by giving us samples of their desserts on the house. It was a happy surprise :-)

Then we walked around the city for a while to digest all the food we had. It was freezing!

I'm done with the first semester of grad school and I couldn't be any happier.
This semester has been the toughest since I felt so lost, and felt like a stranger among many talented graphic design people. But I pulled through, and managed to learn some awesome stuff.

For my design procedures class, I was given a random word, 'knot', and my theme was fear of speaking in the public. With combining all the design process we learned during class, I had to make a handmade book. It was great because I learned all these cool techniques I never knew before; bookbinding, embossing, and die-cutting.

It was also nice that I was able to do some illustration for the editorial layouts.

Ah! I feel so guilty that I haven't been updating my blog. But finally here I am.
I've been so caught up with school work...Parsons wasn't bad compared to this. Besides working for commission time to time, I rarely have time to draw for myself. This sucks.

Unfortunately these spot illos that I've been working on for Time Out NY aren't going to be on print although they have been approved. :-(

This was about NYC bars to get you through the winter, all involving a Survival Man. Sucks to see this happen, but I can at least share them with you.
Anyway, I have one more illo to look forward to getting published for december.

I can't wait for the Winter break. I just booked my ticket and will be going home for three weeks. I'm excited. :-)

It's getting really cold now. I've been sick for the past few days, and it always gets worse at night! The past 3 weeks were like hell because I had so much school work + deadlines for illos + I also got sick. So I was researching on wacky-themed restaurants for an illustration that I'm working on right now, and I came across these!

I was surprised to find that the cosplay cafes actually exist in the states. In Japan, of course, it's not surprising -- but I had no idea that these crazy themed restaurants were all over the world. There's something called a Prison Restaurant, Ninja Cafe, In-Flight Kitchen, and etc. Ninja cafe is actually located in New York. It would be fun to visit.

Okay, here are the last sets of pictures from Korea. I have so much more -- but I'm sure by now you're getting tired of them.

After coming back to NY, I had to once again fly out to Atlanta to be one of the bridesmaid at my friend's wedding. I spent the whole week helping out and by the end of the week I was totally burned-out. The wedding was beautiful even though we couldn't do the outdoor wedding due to the rain. The wedding was on Sunday and my school started the next day. I had to catch 6:40am flight in order to be in time for my first class.

Already I am loaded with so much work. I still can't fully grasp the reality of being back in school -- I hope it gets better week after week. :-)

It's been a week since I came to Korea. Everything was unplanned because I was asked to participate in an ad job in Korea, and they flew me in the next day. I basically had a few hours to pack and while packing I realized my passport was expired. I stayed up the whole night pulling my hair out, but thankfully I was able to run to the Korean Consulate to get a temporary passport.
I've been working the whole time so I didn't get to go out much until now. The job is over, and I have two full months ahead of me to enjoy. I need to take more pictures. :-)

I got to spend this afternoon at Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn. It was really fun seeing all the handmade stuff made by so many creative people. Just looking at all the crafty stuff made me wish I was more crafty. The fair was way bigger than I had expected, and the weather was just perfect too. There were some jewelry I wanted to buy...Tomorrow is the last day it will be held-- it's totally worth going!

Here are two of my new illos in current issue of ReadyMade Magazine. (June/July 2009) I was pretty excited until I found that my name wasn't credited in the page. I mean I'm credited as a contributing illustrator in the masthead, but it is still upsetting to see my illustrations without an artist name in the same page. This is the second time something like this happened to me. Does this happen often? How hard is it to put a name below the page..

I'm craving a coffee and a donut right now...mm I think i deserve a trip to dunkin donuts tomorrow. :-)

I've been sick for the past two weeks. It sucked to be sick especially when I had to go out in public places and try not to cough around people, otherwise they'd think I was infected with the swine flu. I'm fully recovered now. This week will be busy finishing up everything that had been on hold and needs to be done.

All of sudden I got really tired of the header in my blog so I decided to change it. It's slightly different from what I've always done because I don't draw animals that often. It didn't take too long but I like it. I think giraffes are one of the most fascinating animals.

I received some copies of KoreAm Journal in the mail today. KoreAm Journal is a monthly magazine published in California, widely circulated in newsstands and bookstores across North America and Korea. My illustration was for the May 2009 issue. The article was a profile on Giyen Kim, the author of a popular blog Bacon Is My Enemy, and how she chronicles her weight-loss journey. It's really fun to read. I was also thrilled to see my picture/bio in the contributor's page. :-)

Simon from stunch.com added a gallery of my work in his website. His gallery includes beautiful collections of artworks done by some talented artists. I especially enjoy these.

I took this picture today for an interview I was asked to do.
I've been so busy with work lately. Although I was sleeping less and working all day and night, I was really happy. After what seemed like forever, the jobs started coming in again -- and I was commissioned to do 3 illos in one day, followed by another one the next day. I'm finished with 3 of them and they will be in june/july issues. And today I got commissioned to do an illo for a newspaper...which is unbelievable. The weather has been so great this past weekend -- and I couldn't go out to enjoy it much. That's okay, though. I'm just hoping this will continue.

Never thought this would happen to me..but it did.

This evening I got home from grocery shopping and realized my pocket was empty. I went back and retraced all my steps but it was nowhere to be found. I tried calling my phone but it is turned off...I don't know if someone decided to steal it and turned it off -- but I realized I set a lock on my phone so they need to enter a password in order to use it. Or maybe when my phone dropped, it automatically got turned off or got run over by a car. I will never know...because I had set up a lock and nobody can turn it on to pick up my calls!!!

For lunch I had Don-katsu, which is a deep-fried pork cutlet sliced into bite-sized pieces. It is a popular dish in both Japan and Korea, although it is originally from Japan. I sometimes make this at home but it's nicer to eat at this don-katsu restaurant in Flushing since I cannot imitate their special sauce I really like.

I was so happy I got to walk around and enjoy the weather at Central Park yesterday. The weather was a little below 60 during the day. I again realized how big the park was. It would be nice to rent a bike and ride around during the summer. I'm excited to start school this fall. I'm hoping that the Korean currency gets better before school starts so I could go see my parents in Korea.

I was washing my dirty dishes yesterday and all of sudden fell in love with the color of the dish soap. My kitchen doesn't have any flowers or windows, but I decided to throw them in there. I'm thinking about moving again soon. This time I'm really only going to look at newly renovated apartments. I've learned my lesson.

My dad is a typical Korean dad who is very conservative and down to earth. As a well-educated man, he never stops studying. He also loves to read whenever possible. He literally carries around his books everywhere. I think he self-taught himself Chinese (before we moved to China)-- which is amazing because it's hard to learn a new language when you're old. He is the calmest person I know. He is a silly man who laughs at his own jokes -- and I love him for that. I wish I can see him more often. :-(

I heard back from Pratt today. I didn't expect to hear the result so soon, but it is nice to know I have one of the options open. ;-)

The weather was so awesome today. I had lunch with my friend Wendy whom I haven't seen for a long time so it was definitely fun catching up. :-) I wish the weather was like this everyday. I'm now fully recovered from my cold -- need to get a lot of things done now.

My line illustration I did for O, The Oprah Magazine is finally out. It was a really simple assignment but I was glad to do it. It's in the March '09 issue.

Went to the dentist today to tighten my braces, went grocery shopping, and met up with Jiyoung to eat dinner and buy goggles for snowboard trip we're going this Saturday.

Couple weeks ago, I was commissioned to do 3 ad campaigns for Crain -- unfortunately after my first ad was finished and accepted, the company decided not to run the campaign. :-(

My friend, Arum, came to see me from Maryland a few days ago. I've known her since sophomore year in high school -- and it was really nice to have some quality time with whom I feel so close to. Had a little trip to Chelsea Market today. There were quite interesting stuff to see there. I wanted to get those cupcakes but too much frostings would make me sick. Besides, they look too cute to eat. It's been really cold...I'm looking forward to the Summer now.

Happy New Year's Eve!!
I had several plans today -- which I had to cancel because I need to finish up a project I've been working on and start on a new advertisement project for Autoweek.
I can see a huge storm coming in my way. Besides another potential job with an ad agency in Korea, I still have to finish working on my grad school applications.
I hope everything goes well. :-)
This is such a great way to end the year.

New fresh illustrations for Time Out New York magazine. First I sketched fronts and backs, but later the art director wanted only the fronts of the people. The article is about lack of fitness & problem areas on men and women. I enjoyed illustrating fats on the woman especially the lumpy butt part. That reminds me...I need to stop being a lazy bum and go to the gym.

The story is about one of the magazine's columnist -- and how she was ending one relationship and starting another, but they had overlapped. One of them even flew in to Chicago to spend New Years together-- but she ended up spending New Years with...a third guy.

It's getting really cold in New York. I really wanna go outside and walk around but it's just too cold. So, I have been making more promo pieces to send out.

Here is a new piece I did for my promo package. I've been wanting to draw Mr. Softee's ice cream truck for a long time -- but never actually sat down to do it. Ice creams taste better when it's cold for some reason.
I'm happy about the outcome of the election. I'll be able to vote in the next one. :-)

So once again I'm back in New York. I love going home to see my family in Atlanta, but after the whole trip everything gets thrown off and it's hard to get on my feet again.

Anyway, I re-designed my website.
I need to remind myself not to mess with my website again until it is necessary. I'm not an expertise with coding html + css...so it was a pain having to worry about both firefox/safari and internet explorer. :-(
But it's finished now. Yay!!

i'm in love with these two artists : Kim, Hong-Do and Shin, Yoon-Bok from late 1700's.

Kim Hong-Do is now known as the father of Korean traditional painting. He was a court painter during Chosun Dynasty. He was one of the first artist to paint common people. His realistic depictions of people's everyday lives were favored by the King who was interested in a life outside his palace.

Shin Yoon-Bok is also an important figure in the history of Korean art. It is assumed that he/she was the student of Kim Hong-Do. (it's not certain if it was a she or he.) His work brought a lot of controversies because they were too erotic at the time. I really like his soft, feminine line with details and intense highlights of color.

Here's 3 spot illos I did for Popular Mechanics for December '08 issue. They're for an article about the 3 Minute Solutions in your Home. After a few painful revisions -- they told me it was running black & white so I had to change the colors all over again. :-( But now I'm thinking black & white probably looks better.

This is a small piece for the website design i'm doing. Not sure yet if I wanna work on the background or not...

Things have been a little crazy for me these days. Beside my personal issues, I recently learned that my grandfather in Korea had passed away couple months ago...Yeah, my dad and everyone else in Korea didn't want to tell us this sad news. He's been sick for a long time -- but I have never thought he would really leave this soon. Hearing this news from my cousin who came to visit me in New York really broke my heart. When I went to Korea last year in July I never thought that would be my last time seeing him. If I had known...or if somehow I could turn back the time..there's so much to say..
All I can do now is to wish for him to rest in peace and pray for him...he had suffered so much...
I know he will be in good hands. Below is what I started doing for him to put in the place they keep his ashes. We never really had a chance to take a family portrait, so I wanted to have all of us in the portrait. It's still not done yet since I had to stop working on it to have my cousin take it back with her...Starting from bottom left counterclockwise : my dad, grandma, grandpa, aunt, bro, cousin, me, and my younger bro.

After a LONG vacation in Georgia I'm finally back in New York. I meant to update my blog as often as possible -- but I got too lazy. Being back home made me so relaxed and laid back that if I were to stay there longer I won't have anything done. But it was definitely worthwhile and I loved being home with my family. :-)

Last week I met up with Dara to go to an opening show at Giant Robot -- ended up staying there for a few minutes and went to eat at Yakitori. Okonomiyaki is always my favorite! We never get tired of that restaurant.

Here is a portrait of Harry, my older brother. When we were young we used to take art lessons together -- and although I thought I was way better than him -- he was the one who won all the first prizes at competitions.

As the oldest, he was someone who my younger brother and I could look up to. He was always smart, creative, and a bit odd. I remember him telling all our relatives that he's going to become a president of United States when he grows up. (that was when we had no idea that we were going to move to the states)

Now he's studying and working hard to become a doctor. I'm not sure how long it will take, but I know for sure that he will become a great one some day. :-)

My status of now as a non-student -- I've been working full-time at Kate Larkworthy Artist Rep. Agency Monday thru Friday. After work I get home exhausted that I barely feel like doing anything. My dad got worried and keeps calling me to lecture about pursuing my dream. I guess I gotta push myself harder. I just started doing yoga at home and I'm planning to join a gym to work out! Need to make this summer productive...

So when I submitted my work for a cover artist of Chopsticks NY contest few months ago, I heard back from them that I made to the second selection. In order to be chosen for a winner and the finalists I had to create another piece -- about a Japanese traditional festival day held in November. I doubt that I will make it into the final round since I was only able to spend a day and couple hours on this, I was glad to make something that wasn't related to school.

I finally got some copies of Tricycle magazine in the mail.
I think they did an awesome job editing the second page to look nice with my illustration. They weren't kidding about it being a full-page illo. I'm super pumped!

The article is about the author going on a camping trip and how she faces fear when she comes face to face with a bear.

Senior show

So now it's over -- the show was great!
A lot of people came, and I think we did an awesome job this year.
I believe our stressful, sleepless years in Parsons have paid off. I also believe all this hard work will lead us to a greater future and help us become successful and happy with whatever we do once we step out to the real world.

I was so happy that my family was able to make it to my show. I'm so lucky to have such a supporting family. My mom couldn't make it, but I know she would have given anything in the world to be here.

I didn't have my camera until end of the show -- so I didn't take many pictures.

So I got my buttons this weekend. They look great except for just one that looks too dark. I got so excited I started making packages for them right away.
I'll take a better picture later and post it.
I also need to start thinking about selling them on my website. That has to wait till I'm done with redesigning my website.

After a week of Spring break - school is back on again.
This is a personal piece illustrating how all my homework and stress makes me keep eating.

I can't wait till school is over.
Hopefully by then - I will have all my goals accomplished.

I ordered more buttons for myself. I gave away all the ones I had before - so I ordered 200 this time.
I'll probably give some away, but i'm thinking about selling them on my website.
